The A level qualification consists of two parts, AS and A2.

AS or Advanced Subsidiary is a stand-alone qualification and is valued as half a full A level qualification.  It has three units that contribute fifty percent of the full A level.

The A2 is the second half of a full A level qualification.  It also has three units, equal to fifty percent of the full A level.

Most units are assessed by examination, with course work generally counting for only twenty to thirty percent of the final mark in some subjects.

The AS covers the less demanding material in the A level course and the A2 the more in depth aspects.  In the A2 students can expect to extend and combine their knowledge and understanding of the subject and improve their skills across the entire course.
