  • visit the dentist if you're going away for a long time - treatment abroad might be difficult to find or very expensive
  • if you take prescribed medicine regularly, ask your doctor if s/he can give you enough to cover all the time you're away
  • check if there are any restrictions on taking medicine out of the UK or to the countries you're visiting
  • if you have a medical condition carry a record of it with you, together with any medication you need, in case of an emergency
  • take a basic first aid kit - antiseptic cream, plasters, insect repellent, pain killers and water sterilisation tablets
  • if you're travelling to a developing country, before you go buy an emergency medical kit from the chemist, just in case of an emergency
  • get advice for travellers from the Department of Health website - click on the weblink below
  • check whether you need vaccinations, if you do get them done well in advance

  • get information about the country you are travelling to from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website where there is extensive travel advice - click on the weblink below
  • get comprehensive travel insurance and check the small print - it's expensive being ill abroad!
