Below you can find out more information on learning to drive vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, buses or even tractors! Please see below a diagram showing how old you must be to drive certain vehicles...

► Motorbikes    

If you want to learn to ride a motorbike you will have to apply for a provisional driving licence, you can get this from your local post office or click here to apply online. Bikewise is joint partnership run by the Durham County Council Casualty Reduction Forum and is designed to help riders improve their skills and safety. You can also visit the Driving Standards Agency website where you can find more information on learning to ride a bike.

► Cars    

Having your own car will give you lots of freedom, you will need to apply for a provisional licence and choose a driving instructor. There are also other things to think about such as getting car insurance incase your car is damaged or you have an accident. You will also have to pay for car tax, the MOT and of course petrol! for more information on learning to drive please visit the Direct Gov website.

► Buses/ Lorries    

To drive a bus or lorry you will need a PCV (Passenger carrying vehicle) or LGV (Large good vehicle) licence. Please visit the Transport Office website for more information.

► Specialist Vehicles    

If you want to learn how to drive a specialist vehicle such as a tractor you need to be 16 years old. There are also other specialist venicles such as road rollers and motor tricycles, please visit the Transport Office website for more information.

► Taxi's    

If you want to be a taxi driver you will have to pass a Hackney Carriage/Private Hire assessment. Please visit the Transport Office website for more information on becoming a Taxi Driver.
