A plethora of league tables and best university awards have flooded the market in recent years. Caution needs to be exercised in using these to make a judgement about how good a university or college is. Just as an example the University of Sheffield received these accolades in 2001:

• Guardian - 20th
• Daily Telegraph - 13th
• Virgin Guide to British Universities -1st
• Sunday Times - 10th UK University of the Year
