Help 4 Teens - Connexions County Durham

Decisions Points / Your Choices @ 16+

► Key Decisions at 16+

When you are in year 11 you will have a second ‘Key Decision’ to make about what you will do next and where you want to study. You will have 5 learning pathways. Please see the diagram click here....

These are:

GCSE/ Alevel
Diploma (Foundation, Higher or Advanced)
Foundation Learning
Apprenticeships
Employment with Training

* BTEC subjects may be offered in the GCSE and Foundation Learning Pathways.

During the course of Year 11 you’ll have to decide:

what do I want to do next?
where and how can I achieve this?
what will be available?

It’s a good idea to begin planning early to make sure you make the right decision.

Think about some of the following:

How clear are you about the career you want?
Do you want to choose a course that leaves your options open?
Do you want to start training/studying for a specific job?
How do you learn best? In a practical, working situation or being taught in school or college?
Do you need specific qualifications or do you have to go to University?

► Your Choices

The learning pathway you choose will help you decide where you want to study. If you choose 1,2 or 3 you could study in a:

Sixth form - either in your own or another school, all students are 16-19
Sixth form centre - Where students are drawn from a wide number of schools, all students are 16-19
Further Education College - Which may offer more vocational courses and have adult learners as well as young people

If you choose pathway 4 or 5 you would be learning in the workplace but may also spend time in a further education college or work based learning centre.
