What did you learn?
During my work experience, I’ve learned about Connexions and what they aim to provide teachers, pupils and schools, what their aims are and their future plans in order to help young adults with their careers. Different skills that I’ve learnt are communication skills between other members of staff by knowing my tasks and learning about the company. I made sure I stuck to my timetable so I finished off my tasks in the time provided. Another skill I improved at was working independently. I got taught how to use the equipment around the offices, such as the photocopier and the franking machine, so I could use it on my own if I needed it.
What was different?
It was difficult to get used to working longer hours than school times but I got used to it as the week went on. Another difficulty I found earlier in the week was remembering which office was which, because, to me, they all looked exactly the same with different people in them and there were no names or numbers on the doors. As I got used to the building, locating people got easier. All the staff treated me as an adult but also remembered that I wouldn’t be used to doing certain things because I hadn’t experienced working in the building or a workplace before.
Final Conclusions...
It was interesting how everyone had a certain job to do but all worked as a team to get it completed and everyone helped each other (including me needing help) if they were struggling or needed help. It felt slightly strange not in school uniform but still have to look smart for work. I was never bored during the week; I always had something to do, whether it was adjusting a website, sorting sheets of paper out or packing boxes for future Connexions events. Overall it was a very good experience.
