Careers in Business, Administration and Clerical work are mainly office based.  General roles can be in a supporting role providing general administrative tasks such as filing, word-processing and dealing with customers or the public.  Management roles could involve managing staff or processes.  The skills for this type of work include accuracy, good team work, a good standard of literacy and numeracy.

►Management

Managers are part of most organisations and are essential to smooth running.  In large organisations there may be many tiers of management each taking responsibility for a section of work or group of staff.  There are some specialist management areas such as: Human Resources who deal with the recruitment and selection of staff; Marketing Managers who deal with the selling of products or services and Finance where management may be of a budget.

►Civil Service

The Civil Service supports the work of government ministers and executive agencies.  Most Civil Servants work in government departments such as the Ministry of Defence or the Department for Work and Pensions.  It is a huge organisation with office based administrative staff, but also roles in laboratories, prisons, and working overseas.

Some specialist roles may include work with:
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (including the diplomatic service) working in British Embassies overseas.
The Crown Prosecution Service providing legal service on behalf of the government.
The Security and Intelligence Services such as MI5 MI6 and the Government Communications Headquarters.
The UK Border Agency dealing with immigration and passports.
HM Revenue and Customs responsible for tax, vat, etc.

►Working for the European Union (EU)

There are many bodies which make up the institutions of the EU and just like the civil service in the UK, staff are required in all posts and at all levels.  The main jobs are administrator posts at graduate level.  There are also specific posts in language services as translators and interpreters and in science and technology jobs.

►Local Government

Local Government runs all of the local services in the area in which you live, in County Durham this is Durham County Council. There are hundreds of different job roles but the 3 main types of work are: administration which supports and manages the services of the council; service roles such as social, work, youth work, etc. and jobs usually at professional level such as librarian, architect, civil engineer, etc.

►Health Administration and Management

Careers in the health service management could be in finance, estates and facilities, information and patient data, etc. The NHS has a graduate management training scheme for routes in general management, financial management, informatics management and human resources management.  Medical administrative roles could be in a hospital, healthcare trust or GP practice.
