Applying for Higher Education / Art and Design Courses

► Art Foundation Courses

Most students study a one-year broad-based foundation course before they start a degree. The purpose of this course is to introduce you to a greater variety of art and design ideas and improve your technical skills.

Most courses also include study of art history or comparative studies in art. This will help you to explore which specialist direction your talents lie in, help you in your choice of a more specialised degree course and the choice of appropriate institution.

Most students take a foundation course at a college close to home. If you are applying for an Art Foundation course you need to apply on the colleges/institutions own application form. These should normally be sent off by mid December in the year prior to application.

► Applying to study for an Art & Design degree

The application procedure for Art and Design Degrees is a little more complex as applicants have the choice of two pathways, Route A and Route B.
Route A - if a course is listed as Route A in the UCAS Directory then you must use Route A to apply for it. You can apply for up to 5 courses and your applications will be sent to all your choices of University at the same time.
Via Route B - You can apply for up to three course choices. If a course is listed through Route B, you must use Route B to apply for it. Applicants through Route B will be asked to fill in a course preference form to indicate their first, second & possible third choices. Copied application forms will be sent to your chosen courses sequentially in order of preference.

It is possible for applicants to use both Routes A & B - You will be able to indicate on your UCAS form (by ticking a box) that you wish to add choices for consideration through Route B. UCAS will send out the necessary documentation to add choices and declare an interview preference at the appropriate time.

It is essential that you study the UCAS Directory and accompanying notes very carefully and seek advice from your art teacher/tutor and/or Connexions Personal Adviser, especially with regard to receiving offers, making decisions and timescales.
